A dyslexia-friendly workplace

is a workplace that facilitates those with reading and writing difficulties, maths difficulties and language difficulties.

A dyslexia-friendly workplace contributes to a more inclusive working life which:

  • Is characterized by openness.
  • Has attractive workplaces.
  • Provides strengthened HSE work.

The aim is for the pilot project to result in a permanent project to be run by Dyslexia Norway.

StS-ISONOR is thus participating in this pilot project and was invited to tell a little about how we view the project from a management perspective.

Why should we be a dyslexia-friendly workplace?

Why did we initially choose to participate in this project?

The starting point is very simple. Our industry needs qualified labor now and in the future. More than half of the executive personnel in the industry will retire within 15 years, in our company alone there are 157 employees who have reached the age of 55.

Between 5 and 10% of Norwegians have dyslexia or dyscalculia.

If we become a more attractive employer for this group, we will increase our recruitment base.

These are practical subjects that do not initially require good reading skills to do a good job.

It is important that we create a safe workplace

where one dare to be open about the topic. That we plan so that those who have challenges with reading and writing skills, will be allowed to better mastery in relation to their own everyday working life, and at the same time we will fulfill our need for qualified labour.

Seeing the big picture

Being able to visualize problems and having a practical approach to tasks are good qualities that are very prominent among those with reading and writing difficulties.

Inclusion- a common social mission

We have taken in young people and apprentices and given them professional expertise for more than 50 years. Many of them have been prevented from taking vocational exams or from taking up and further education because the education system has not been organized.

Today, the technology is there, for example speech synthesis, but there is still a need to upgrade learning materials and exams.

It is also a stated aim to reduce youth unemployment.

We have courses that help young people quickly enter working life. Our instructors pay special attention to provision for dyslexics and we see that 84% of those who complete our course are employed after completing the course.

Ensuring that all employees are included and valued makes us a more attractive employer in the competition for the best talent. It has a good business value!
